Godfrey Phillips Ltd. ~ Sports Cigarettes - P50-152-2-12 Sportsmen (1954)

1954
P50-152-2-12 Sportsmen
Godfrey Phillips Ltd. ~ Sports Cigarettes
25 cards

This set is the last of the Sports cigarettes package issues to include footballers. There are also a couple of other series of Sportsmen which don't include any footballers, and other series on Cricketers and Radio Stars. This set can be collected in two ways: as individual cards trimmed to the back of the slide with 'Sports' printed at the top and 'Godfrey Phillips Ltd' at the bottom, or as complete slides but I don't have an example of a complete slide to show you. I'd like to thank Carl at www.rarecards.co.uk for allowing me to use some illustrations from his website, which is an amazing source of rare football cards.

25 cards

These can be collected in two ways, as individual cards trimmed and therefore anonymous or as complete slides that have been opened and laid flat. This collection includes details of the players club and three of the cards are relating to cup competitions, showing a list of recent winners. Unfortunately, I don't have any illustrations of cards from this set.

UPDATE:  bmac has kindly sent in a scan of a complete slide for this collection.

25 cards

These can be collected in four ways: as individual paper cards trimmed to the back of the packet and therefore anonymous or as complete packets that have been opened and laid flat. This collection was also issued printed on card that was used as a slide within the packet of cigarettes. Over the next day or so I'll be including all the different Sports collections issued between 1948 and 1954 and some of these will include illustrations of complete sheets. I'd like to thank Carl at www.rarecards.co.uk for allowing me to use some illustrations from his website, which is an amazing source of rare football cards. The paper versions have the players initial before the surname and the card versions have the initials after the surname.

Footie Hero Revealers
Sugar Puffs / Quaker Oats
5 cards

I've no idea what to call these. They aren't cards but they still fall into the cartophilic domain. Plastic books is perhaps the best way to describe them. If you hold it up to the light the image of the footballer will be revealed - like magic!
UPDATE (10-10-2022 06:58):  Steve Marsh has provided a scan from the back of a box of Sugar Puffs showing these cards.

World Cup?
Vanderhout International
Belgium

Mark Avenell has sent in some scans of stickers that probably come from Belgium, showing three England players. I've added three Brazilian players. Neither of us know who issued them. The country name is printed in two languages - French and Dutch - and the stickers also include the currency symbol of the players country. Can anyone help?
