IanSammel has provided scans of some of the cards from this collection. Although I have details of the set in my database I didn't have any information about any the cards until now.

IanSammel also points out that there are five different back designs amongst the cards shown here. The cards are unnumbered and don't carry a series title. We would be glad to hear from anyone who can supply further information on this rare set of cards.

It seems that these cards had been issued by the cigarette company „Menes“ in Wiesbaden, Germany. The company was forced to close due to its Jewish owners and some died in the camps and some family members were able to escape.

They used to produce cigarettes under several brand names (e.g. Damara, Hohlwein Zigaretten, Freiherr von Kleydorff etc) and were famous at that time. Especially Hohlwein, one of the most famous graphic designer, did have his own brand with them.

These sports cards were produced as a „advertising“ I assume, same as those „Sammelalbum“, which were published with several topics and had included photos etc in it.

If you are interested, shoot me a message, I do have several items of Menes from that time and happy to discuss
